From Palmerston North City
Whether you're travelling from north or south, east or west, Te Apiti - Manawatu Gorge is easily accessible.
From Palmerston North City, head east from the city centre, continue down Main Street, which will become Napier Road (SH 3). This takes you past Ashhurst and Ashhurst Domain, and over a long bridge. On the left hand side at the entrance to Te Apiti – Manawatu Gorge there is a large car park, where you can walk the Tawa Loop and main track. This is approximately 12kms from Palmerston North City.
While SH3 through the Gorge is closed, alternative routes to cross the Gorge by road include the Saddle Rd and the Pahiatua Track, both scenic alternatives that don't add much time at all to your journey. This also means you can access Te Apiti - Manawatu Gorge and it's many walking tracks from either end. Latest information can be found on NZTA website.
From Vogel Street in Woodville (the main street in the town centre) head west. This road becomes Napier Road (SH 3). Follow it for about 4km, and you will see the access via the Ballance Bridge to the Ballance Gorge Road on your left. At this end of the Gorge, you can access the smaller 4km loop track which is ideal for young families, and the Woodville ferry Reserve. Continue down Ballance Gorge Road, and you will come to the Bridge Cafe and Timeless Horsetreks on the left side of the road.
