From Palmerston North City
Heading east from the city centre, continue down Main Street, which will become Napier Road (SH 3). This takes you past the entrance of Ashhurst and Ashhurst Domain, and over a long bridge. On the left hand side at the entrance to Te Apiti – Manawatu Gorge there is a large car park, where you can walk the Tawa Loop and main track. This is approximately 12kms from Palmerston North City.
If you continue driving through Te Apiti – Manawatu Gorge, you will get some spectacular scenery of the river below, and the railway tracks on the other side. At the western end of the gorge, you will cross another road bridge to exit the gorge. After this, take the first right turn onto Ballance Bridge, which will take you towards the eastern entrance to the Gorge Walk, and access to the smaller 4km loop track which is ideal for young families. Continue down the Gorge Road, and you will come to the Bridge Cafe on the left side of the road.
From Vogel Street in Woodville (the main street in the town centre) head west. This road becomes Napier Road (SH 3). Follow it for about 4km, and you will see the access via the Ballance Bridge to the Ballance Gorge Road on your left. If you continue along SH 3, you will see the gate entrance to the Woodville Ferry Reserve on your left, and just past that is a road bridge which takes you through the gorge on SH 3.
